2015 FIBT World Championships – Four-Man Bobsled

From Winterberg, Germany

Bobsled fans were treated to the closest of competitions coming into the fourth run of the four-man FIBT World Championships.  German Max Arndt led the competition by .01 over World Cup four-man champion Oskars Melbardis, and only by .03 over countryman Nico Wather. Franceso Friedrich was fourth, seemingly out of contention.

The racing stayed close in the final, with Francesco Friedrich inching closer to a bronze medal. His run of 53.75 tied for second fastest of the heat. Nico Walther did what he could, making the quickest run of the heat, a hundredth faster than Friedrich.  It was the man sitting in the silver medal position, Oskars Melbardis, who had trouble. Despite a track record push, the Latvian had a large skid going into Curve 0, and that scrubbed off all the time he needed for a gold, and Melbardis would have to settle for bronze.

The last run down was Max Arndt.  Arndt, as well, fell back to Nico Walther, but not by enough, and Arndt took gold by .02 over Walther, making it a German one-two.  FFriedrich would settle for fourth.  Lamin Deen tied a best-ever finish by a British pilot in the World Championships with a fifth place finish, after a career-best weekend in Winterberg.

Steven Holcomb led the way in World Championships for the United States with a ninth place effort.  Nick Cunningham had a weekend-best run in his fourth race to move up from 16th to 14th, while Codie Bascue put all three sleds in the top 20 for the United States with a 20th place effort.

Chris Spring hadn’t finished in the top eight all season long, but saved his best effort for last with an eighth place finish for Canada.  Teammate Justin Kripps finished 13th, while Kaillie Humphries overcame a second run sled-flip to finish 27th.
