2015/2016 FIL World Cup – Women’s Luge – Race 8

From Altenberg, GER

Latvian Eliza Cauce came into the second heat as the leader of the women’s luge race in Altenberg. A slow start in her second run, however, put her behind the eight ball. Despite a rally on the bottom half of the German course, Cauce could only manage second behind German Tatjana Hüfner.

Hüfner came into the second heat in third, less than a tenth off the lead. She threw down a blistering second run, over .15 faster than the second fastest (Natalie Geisenberger), and took the lead. Both Cauce and Tatiana Ivanova had a chance to unseat the German, but couldn’t beat Hüfner.

Cauce would settle for silver, with Ivanova getting bronze. Geisenberger struggled in her first run, with her second run moving her from eighth to fourth. Canadian Kimberley McRae finished fifth.

American Erin Hamlin made a big mistake at the top of her first run, leaving her 12th going into the second heat. That second run was third fastest of the heat, moving her up to sixth. Teammates Summer Britcher and Emily Sweeney finished ninth and 12th, respectively. Canadian Arianne Jones finished 14th.
