Eggert & Benecken Slide to World Championship

From Oberhof, GER

(January 28, 2023) – It wasn’t a cakewalk, but it wasn’t overly challenging either. Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken slid to gold in Oberhof, winning by .171 over teammates Tobias Wendl & Tobias Arlt.

Eggert and Benecken opened up a .153 lead over their teammates in the first heat, with Austria’s Yannick Müller and Armin Frauscher wedged in between, just ahead of Wendl and Arlt.

On the second run Wendl and Arlt put down a very quick run, the fastest of the heat to that point, and Müller and Frauscher couldn’t match that pace as they fell back behind the Germans by .021.

Then it was Eggert and Benecken’s turn. The duo’s second run was just about as quick as their first, the quickest of the heat to give them the two quickest runs of the race on their way to gold.

The win gave Eggert and Benecken their fifth world championship title.

Wendl and Arlt finished second, with Müller and Frauscher third.

Austria’s Thomas Steu and Lorenz Koller had the fourth quickest run in each heat on their way to a fourth place finish. Latvians Martins Bots and Roberts Plume finished fifth, while Italy’s Emmanuel Rieder and Simon Kainzwaldner finished sixth.

The United States’ Zack Digregorio and Sean Hollander finished seventh, while Canada’s Devin Wardrope and Cole Zajanski finished 13th.
