Mapp Wins Para Bobsled Finale, Castillo Takes Season Title

From Lillehammer, NOR

(February 12, 2023) – Great Britain’s Corie Mapp held off Swiss pilot Jonas Frei in the final race of the 2022/2023 IBSF Para Bobsled season to win gold.

Mapp set the quick downtime of the race in the first heat as he was .12 ahead of USA’s Robert Balk, with World Cup point leader Guillermo Castillo in third. On the second run neither Balk nor Castillo could match the times of either Frei or Hermann Ellmaier.

That left the door wide open for Mapp. Mapp’s second slide was the third quickest of the heat and well behind Frei’s, but enough to take gold in the finale.

Frei won silver, while world champion Hermann Ellmaier won bronze.

Balk finished forth, Sweden’s Sebastian Westin finished fifth, while Castillo finished sixth.

Castillo’s sixth place finish was enough to win the season title ahead of Mapp, with Frei in third to round out the season.
