Cernanska Slides to NAC 2-Woman Gold

From Whistler, CAN

(December 2, 2023) – Viktoria Cernanska slid to her second North American Cup two-woman gold medal, beating out seven North American teams for the top spot.

Cernanska opened up a .28 second advantage over teammate Erica Voss, with the United States’ Riley Tejcek and Canadian Eden Wilson in the hunt for the lead.

In the second heat chaos ensued. Wilson and brakewoman Leanna Garcia slid to the lead with Voss, Tejcek, and Cernanska to go. Tejcek was next, but crashed halfway through her run, guaranteeing Wilson her first two-woman medal as a pilot.

Erica Voss went next, and like Tejceck had trouble midway through her run and did not finish.

That left Cernanska to go. She and brakewoman Lucia Mokrasova had the second start of the heat and while their run wasn’t as quick as their first it was more than enough to win gold.

The gold for Cernanska was her second two-woman gold in North American Cup competition and first on the 2010 Olympic track.

Wilson and Garcia took silver, the first medal for Wilson as a pilot and the first medal ever for Garcia.

American Sylvia Hoffman won her fourth NAC bronze medal, this time with Amoni Ashby on her brakes.

Kristen Bujnowski finished in fourth, up from seventh on her second run. Teammate Melissa Lotholz finished fifth, up from eighth in the first run. Lotholz had the quickest run of the race with her second run to move up to fifth.

Lauren Brzozowski rounded out the top six for the United States.
