2014/2015 FIBT World Cup – Women’s Skeleton – Race 3

From Altenberg, GER

What looked to be a potentially golden day for German Skeleton going into the final heat of women’s skeleton was disastrous at the top. Tina Hermann came to the second run as the leader, but fell to fourth after Maria Orlova took her first ever World Cup gold medal.  Orlova led a solid Russian charge, with teammate Elena Nikitina joining her on the podium in third.  Sandwiched in between? Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold, who took silver.

Hermann ended up tied for fourth with teammate Sophia Griebel, and Swiss slider Marina Gilardoni took sixth.  Hermann leaves Altenberg as the World Cup leader, just ahead of teammate Griebel.

The American women will be happy to see Altenberg in their rear view mirror. Despite some decent starts and a decent run or two, Annie O’Shea and Savannah Graybill finished 17th and 19th, respectively.

The Canadians fared a little better, with Jane Channell leading the way in 11th. Lanette Prediger finished 15th and Elisabeth Vathje 20th.

British Skeleton, aside from Lizzy Yarnold’s silver medal, saw Laura Deas take tenth place and a new start record, while Rose McGrandle took eighth.
