(November 17, 2022) – France’s Margot Boch won her second straight European Cup women’s monobob in Lillehammer, edging out Belgium’s Kelly van Petegem for gold.
Boch trailed Race 1 silver medalist, Germany’s Maureen Zimmer, by just .03 after one heat, with Andreea Grecu, Van Petegem and others in the hunt. On the second run van Petegem put down the best time of the heat to leapfrog Grecu and move into the lead. Boch’s second run time was a tick slower, but combined with her first run it was enough to take the lead with only Zimmer to go.
On her second run Zimmer once again set the quick time off the start as the only woman to set a time in the 5.60s in either heat, and seemed to be on her way to gold. However a late mistake scrubbed a significant amount of speed and she fell to third, giving Boch the win.
The gold for Boch was her second straight and fourth in women’s monobob. The silver for van Petegem was her first ever time on the podium.
Andreea Grecu fell from third to fourth in her second run, tied with Switzerland’s Martina Fontanive, while Great Britain’s Adele Nicoll finished sixth, a career best as a pilot.
Nicoll’s teammate, former standout brakewoman Mica Moore, finished 14th. Moore had the second strongest start in both heats behind Zimmer.
