From Sigulda, LAT
(December 2, 2022) – Alexandra Oberstolcz won the first race of the FIL Continental Cup women’s luge season, beating out a pair of German sliders for top honors.
Oberstolcz entered the second heat well behind Germany’s Josephine Buse, who had thrown down a huge first run that was a half-second faster than anyone else in the competition. On the second run, the Italian held her spot and looked to have solidified at silver medal.
Buse looked to be on her way to gold, with split times very near her first run effort. However, disaster struck late in her run and the German crashed out, receiving a DNF and missing out on a podium.
That put Germany’s Melina Hansch and Laura Koch into the medals, in second and third, respectively.
Austria’s Annia Grundböck finished fourth, while Latvia’s Anna Zizupe and Amand Ogorodnikova rounded out the top six.
