Humphries Cruises to Altenberg Monobob Gold

From Altenberg, GER

(January 21, 2023) – Kaillie Humphries has slid well most everywhere that there is to slide. She’s won gold medals on all but one active sliding track in the world (Pyeongchang being the lone exception), and is always a force to be reckoned with.

However, outside of Francesco Friedrich, nobody has ever slid Altenberg the way Humphries has. On Saturday she once again took gold, winning handily over the competition.

The American slider took advantage of a skiddy run by Laura Nolte to open up a .46 second advantage over the German. On the second run Nolte put the pressure on Humphries, setting a second run downtime only .01 off of the first time set by Humphries. However, the American was just too strong, as her second run was .05 quicker than her first and more than enough to give her gold.

It was Humphries’ fourth monobob gold medal in five attempts in Altenberg. Between the single and two-seater sleds, Humphries has now amassed 12 gold medals and 17 medals overall in Altenberg. She hasn’t missed a podium on the track since the 2008/2009 sliding season, where she finished eighth.

Nolte’s silver was her fourth straight monobob medal and second straight silver.

Australia’s Bree Walker overcame a bumpy first run to finish third, her first medal of the World Cup season.

China’s Qing Ying set a career-best mark with a fourth place finish. Just behind her Canada’s Cynthia Appiah put down the third quickest run of the second heat to move up from ninth to fifth.

Romania’s Andreea Grecu rounded out the top six.

Nicole Vogt scored her first top ten of the post-holiday break, having moved up from 11th in the first heat with a solid second run. Canada’s Bianca Ribi crashed on her second run, but was able to finish to get a time and points.

With two races left in the World Cup monobob season, Kaillie Humphries holds a 65 point advantage over Laura Nolte. Cynthia Appia is third, with Kim Kalicki and Bianca Ribi rounding out the top five.
