Taubitz Leads German Sweep of the Women’s Podium in Altenberg

From Altenberg, GER

(February 4, 2023) – Julia Taubitz cruised to victory in Altenberg as the German women took a clean sweep of the podium.

In the first heat Taubitz opened up a lead of over a tenth of a second over teammate Dajana Eitberger, with Anna Berreiter in third. Latvia’s Elina Vitola and Austria’s Madeleine Egle finished the heat just out of the top three but within reach of the medals.

On the second run Vitola and Egle both were relatively clean but left the door open for the Germans, and the Germans took advantage. Berreiter put down a quick second run to move into the lead with only her two teammates to go. Eitberger was next, and while she was quick she couldn’t match Berreiter’s pace and fell to second with only Taubitz to go.

Taubitz’s second run was nearly as quick as her first as she set the two quick times of the race on her way to a .307 second victory over Berreiter, with Eitberger rounding out the German sweep in third.

Egle finished the race in fourth, just ahead of Vitola in fifth. Italy’s Sandra Robatscher rounded out the top six.

Summer Britcher led the way for the United States in eighth place. Teammate Emily Sweeney finished 12th, two spots ahead of Ashley Farquharson who rounded out the American effort in 14th.

Canada’s Trinity Ellis finished 15th, two spots ahead of Embyr-Lee Susko in 17th. Caitlin Nash and Carolyn Maxwell finished 23rd and 24th.

With four races to go in the World Cup season, Taubitz holds a lead of 25 points over Eitberger and 92 points over Berreiter. Egle and Emily Sweeney round out the top five.
