(December 1, 2023) – Maureen Zimmer edged out Andreea Grecu in the second race of the 2023/2024 IBSF Europe Cup monobob season to win her first gold of the year.
Grecu trailed Zimmer after the first heat by just .04, with Great Britain’s Adele Nicoll in search of her first medal in third.
On the second run Nicoll had a late issue that put her behind Czechia’s Patricia Tajcnarova for what would eventually be a fourth place finish. Grecu was next, and put down the quickest run of the heat to that point to take the lead with just one sled to go.
Zimmer, the defending world junior champion, fell behind by .01 off the top. Her slide was just a tick better, and her downtime for the second run matched Grecu to give her the .04 second victory.
The gold for Zimmer was her third in four Europe Cup monobob races. She’s podiumed in all but one of her nine starts.
The bronze for Tajcnarova was her first in a race with a full field of sleds.
Nicoll finished fourth, a career-best as a pilot, with Kelly van Petegem and Debora Annen tied for fifth, which is a career-best for both women.
Australia’s Sarah Blizzard finished ninth, while Italian motorsports star Simona de Silvestro finished 14th.
