Klots Sweeps Sigulda Para Sport Stop

From Sigulda, LAT

(December 17, 2023) – Arturs Klots won his second straight Para Sport World Cup gold medal on his home ice in Sigulda, this time beating out 12-time World Cup winner Corie Mapp for top honors.

Klots led by a tenth of a second over Mapp after one heat, with Austria’s Hermann Ellmauer back in third, .28 back.

In the second heat Ellmauer put down a second run that wasn’t quite as good as his first run but enough to hold onto his spot ahead of Christopher Stewart of Switzerland.

Mapp was next and opened up his lead over Ellmauer by another .06, with just Klots to go.

The Latvian matched Mapp’s run through the first three splits, but pulled away late to win his second straight gold.

The win for Klots was his tenth in World Cup action. For Mapp, the silver medal was his 30th medal.

Ellmauer won bronze, his fourth.

Stewart finished fourth, .07 out of the medals, while Israel Blanco of Spain finished just a hundredth back in fifth.

Guillermo Castillo rounded out the top six.

USA’s Robert Balk had trouble late in his first run and finished the heat in ninth. His second run was the fastest of the second heat and enough to move him up to eighth.

That eighth place finish came at the expense at Lonnie Bissonnette, who finished ninth.
