Weston Cruises to Another St. Moritz Victory

From St. Moritz, SUI

(January 9, 2026) – Matt Weston’s race didn’t go as well as it usually does for him. By that, he “only” won by .91 seconds compared to the usual St. Moritz blowout he’s had.

Weston led China’s Zheng Yin after the first heat, with Wednesday’s silver medalist Amedeo Bagnis in third. Christopher Grotheer and 2023 World Championships bronze medalist Seunggi Jung in fifth.

The second run saw some big movers early on, with Wenhao Chen and Axel Jungk both catapulting up the order. Chen held the lead with the top five to go, but saw Jung take over and move into what would be a top five finish.

Grotheer, Wednesday’s bronze medalist, then put down a quick run of his own with a start that was .11 quicker than his first. That, however, wasn’t enough to keep Bagnis behind him with the Italian moving into the lead by .22.

Yin was next. First off in the first heat, Yin didn’t have the better track conditions for that run that some others had. Despite that, his second run was a bit off the pace and the Chinese slider fell behind Bagnis by .07 with Weston to go.

Weston, who was under the weather, matched his 4.77 from the first heat with another. Despite a few small issues early, his second slide was even quicker than his first as he slid to a .91 second victory over Bagnis, with Yin the only other slider within a full second of the Brit.

The win was number five in six races for Weston, and third straight in St. Moritz, while Bagnis’s silver was his second straight and third straight top five. Yin’s bronze gave him three on the season.

Grotheer took fourth, Jung fifth, and Chen sixth, with Jungk moving up from 16th to eighth.

Despite being not thrilled with either run, USA’s Austin Florian had the second quick start in both heats on his way to tenth, up from 14th in the first heat for his third top ten on the season. The first heat was not kind to the Americans, with Nick Tucker 26th and Andy Whittier 27th as the two sliders who missed the second heat.

With one race left to go in the 2025/2026 World Cup season, Matt Weston holds a sizeable lead over Zheng Yin. Seunggi Jung is third, Marcus Wyatt fourth, and Axel Jungk sixth.
