2013/2014 FIBT World Cup – Königssee – Men’s Skeleton

From Königssee, Germany,

A very quick track led to a very entertaining race in Königssee, with Martins Dukurs doing what best could be described as “Martins Dukurs” things.  Dukurs needed to win both heats and the overall race to take the FIBT Triple Trophy.  Coming into the second heat with almost a half-second advantage, Dukurs had to stand and wait while the track record fell twice before he got a shot at it.  Not only did Dukurs set the fast time in both heats, he obliterated the track record by a half-second.   With that second run, Dukurs clinched the gold medal, the European Championship gold medal, the overall World Cup title, the FIBT Triple Trophy and the €100,000 that goes with it.

“No words, looks like the skeleton Gods love me. That’s the goal of the team, I have an amazing team. I’m taking them on a vacation (with the Triple Trophy money),” said Dukurs on his huge win in Bavaria.

Tomass Dukurs was no slouch himself, holding the track record for about a minute and finishing in second place, while Frank Rommel of Germany finished in the bronze position, having set the track record himself.  Matt Antoine of the United States took fourth with what was an otherwise solid second run, but couldn’t hold up to the blistering paces set ahead of him.  Alexander Kröckel of Germany took fifth.

John Daly came into the second run in seventh, but Kreisel was tough to Daly and many other sliders, and Daly fell back to 13th place.  Teammate Kyle Tress finished 16th.

British slider Kristan Bromley had a tough first run, going into the second heat in 16th place.  His second run would have placed him in second in the first run, moving him up ten spots to sixth place in the process.  Teammates Dom Parsons and Michael Swift finished 14th and 27th.

Dave Greszczyszyn was the top-finishing Canadian in 11th, while teammate Patrick Rooney finished in 22nd place.
