2014 Olympics – Luge Team Relay

From Sochi, Russia

Germany continued its luge dominance, this time in the luge team relay.  Throwing gold medalists of every discipline at their competition, the Germans sailed easily to gold.  Natalie Geisenberger, Felix Loch and the team of Wendl/Arlt were all quick, and won by just over a full second over Russia.  The home team was quick, but lost a half second in women’s luge and another four tenths in doubles.  Demchenko was also a little slower than Loch, and that left the Russians on the outside looking in.  Latvia finished third, never really contending for a top-two, but they did hold back a furious challenge from the Canadians.  The team of Alex Gough, Samuel Edney and Walker/Snith took fourth, just a tenth of a second out of a medal. Canadian luge has never won a luge medal.  Italy took fifth.

The United States finished sixth in the first ever Olympic luge team relay.  Bronze medalist Erin Hamlin had the second quickest run of all the ladies to lead the way for the Americans.
