2015/2016 IBSF World Cup – Four-Man Bobsled – Race 1

From Altenberg, GER

It was a German sweep of the podium at a snowy Altenberg. After the first run it was clear that the Germans were the pilots to beat.  It came down to two local pilots, and in the end of it was Francesco Friedrich sweeping the men’s bobsled program, adding the four-man gold to his two-man gold.

Nico Walther settled for silver after coming into the second heat as the leader. Max Arndt couldn’t match his incredibly clean pair of runs in two-man and finished in the bronze position.

Rico Peter finished fourth for Switzerland, while Oskars Kibermanis was the top-scoring Latvian in fifth. Lamin Deen finished sixth for Great Britain.

Nick Cunningham was the top-finishing American in 14th. Much like in his two-man race, Cunningham’s second run was much better than his first.  Teammate Steven Holcomb appeared to injure himself as his team pulled the sled back for a second attempt at the start.  For the second run, the former World Champion sat in on the start, leaving just three athletes to push. Between that and really unfavorable weather conditions, Holcomb did manage to move up a couple of spots from 19th to 17th.

Justin Kripps was the top-scoring North American in 10th.  Kripps came into the second heat in 14th, but a huge push combined with a very quick run down saw the Canadian spend a few runs in the leaders box

World Cup champion Oskars Melbardis just couldn’t find the speed in either run, and finished eighth. British World Cup rookie Olly Biddulph finished 18th.
