From Igls, AUT
Francesco Friedrich will take the overnight lead with him after two runs. The German had a uncharacteristically sloppy second run in seemingly heavy snow, but found enough speed to double his advantage over 2nd place to .27 going into the third run.
The battle for positions two through six is tight. Nico Walther moved from third to second in the second heat, just .01 ahead of Alexander Kasjaov. Those two are just barely in the medal positions, as Kasjanov is only .02 ahead of Great Britain’s Lamin Deen.
Deen came into the second run in sixth, moving up two spots ahead of Rico Peter of Switzerland and German Max Arndt. Those two sleds are just .04 and .05 out of a World Championship medal.
Chris Spring was the top scoring Canadian in the race, moving up to 12th after coming into the second run in 14th. Teammate Justin Kripps, however, struggled in his second run, dropping from 12th to 17th.
It was a disappointing day for the Americans, to say the least. Nick Cunningham led the way in 16th. Steven Holcomb’s team struggled to load in the sled in the first run, leaving him 23rd going into the second heat. Holcomb’s team had a much better load and run on their second run, moving up to 19th.
John Jackson scored a 13th place finish after two heats in the second British Sled.
