From Umhausen, AUT
For the first time in a while, there was a team other than Patrick Pigneter & Florian Clara in contention for a World Cup title at the end of the season, and in Umhausen, Pavel Porshnev and Ivan Lazarev showed why they’re now the World Cup champions.
The Russian duo came into the final race of the year in a near dead-heat with the Italians, with whichever team finished ahead of the other set to claim the title.
On their first run, Porshnev & Lazarev did what they needed to do, setting the fast time of the heat and putting the pressure on Florian & Clara. The Italians couldn’t answer in the first run, finishing the heat in fourth place, .93 behind.
The Italians came to life in the second run, though, putting down the fastest run of the day and putting the pressure back on Porshnev & Lazarev. The Russians came down almost a half-second behind Pigneter & Clara, and it was enough to win the gold medal in Umhausen, and with it the overall World Cup title.
The Austrian duo of Rupert Brueggler & Tobias Angerer finished in second, .33 off the combined time of the Russians, while Pigneter & Clara moved up to third, but would have to settle for bronze.
Pigneter & Clara finish the season in second place overall, 25 points behind the Russians, while Brueggler & Angerer finish the season in third place.
