FIBT World Cup – Round 4 – Women’s Skeleton – Cancelled Heat 1

From Altenberg, Germany

Once again snow is an issue in Germany.  The first ten sliders came down in just about ideal conditions, but as USA’s Katie Uhlaender took the start area, the snow began to pick up.  The middle of the pack appeared to be the most affected by the heavier, wet snow, with the weather lifting for the final five or six athletes.  World Cup leader Olga Potylitsina crashed coming off Turn 4 where so many other athletes also had trouble.  While she was able to regain her footing on the sled, her time of 1:06 and some change couldn’t get her into the second heat.

This has all become a moot point, however as the first heat has been thrown out due to weather.   Track conditions today were far better than the conditions in Winterberg, and those times were left to stand.  Plenty of top athletes then had to slide through awful track conditions, with many of the top 10  not making the second heat.  Today, save for five or six slides in the middle, athletes ranked roughly where they had in previous events.

With that said, here’s how they finished in the now non-existant heat 1:
