Jamanka Holds Off Hasler in Yanqing Monobob Action

From Yanqing, CHN

(October 25, 2021) – Mariama Jamanka gave Germany it’s third gold medal of the day in Yanqing, backing up two skeleton gold medals with a gold in women’s monobob.

The 2018 Olympic women’s bobsled champion came into the second heat in second place, .13 behind Canada’s Cynthia Appiah. On the second run Jamanka once again put down a solid run, the third quickest of the heat. Appiah couldn’t answer, finding trouble midway down the track and finishing with just the seventh quickest time of the heat to finish .35 behind Jamanka in third place.

Jamanka’s gold was her first ever medal in international monobob competition. In the 2020/2021 World Cup season she never finished better than eighth (Igls).

Switzerland’s Melanie Hasler wedged herself between Jamanka and Appiah, finishing second after putting down the second quickest run of the second heat.

Appiah’s bronze was another strong showing for the Canadian. Despite her second run she took bronze and out-pushed the field, setting the quick start in both heats.

Appiah’s teammate Christine de Bruin jumped up from seventh in the first heat to finish fourth, .07 ahead of American Kaillie Humphries. Germany’s Laura Nolte rounded out the top six with a track record second run to move up from 14th in the first heat.

American Elana Meyers Taylor finished just outside of the top six in eighth place. She came into the second run in third, but some issues late dropped her out of the top six. Her push in the second heat tied Appiah for the fastest of the second run.
