A Note of Thanks – 2012 World Championship Edition

I have some thanks to pass out for this weekend.  I have a lot more to add about the season in general, that will come later this weekend.  Anyway, here it goes:

This February marks the first trip for an event for me at Lake Placid.  From the time I arrived in town far later than I had anticipated the morning prior to the final heat of four-man bobsled, just about anyone I’ve come in contact with has been fantastic.

First and foremost, thank you to the places that put me up on relatively short notice.  Art Devlin’s Olympic Motor Inn, The Lakeview Motor Inn and Wildwood on the Lake are very cozy and staffed by really nice people.  If you’re staying in the area, be sure to give them a call.

Second, the folks at the Lake Placid Sliding Complex are a mix of dedicated volunteers and staffers.  Any question I had as to where I needed to be, every shuttle ride I needed, and really anyone I came into contact with was polite, helpful and knowledgeable.  The staff at LP Sliding are second to none.

Jon Lundin and Wendy Townsley were nothing but helpful to all members of the media, from those who have covered events here for years upon years to those of us who are at their first go-round.  Jon and Wendy both made this event far easier to cover than it would have been otherwise.

Two of the photographers this weekend were gracious enough to help a guy out with his first time shooting at the track.  So to Mike Groll and CJ Gunther both, thank you for your support and help.

There have been so many athletes I’ve had a chance to chat with over the last 10 days, and to a person they’ve all been fantastic.  Everyone who I had a chance to have a moment or two with, thanks for saying hi!  It’s been a pleasure to watch everyone race all season, and to see everyone race in person has been great.  You’re all an inspiration for many, and your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

My good friend Paul Varga with WSLP is an inspiration for anyone involved in media.  His hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, and I’m sure will be rewarded many times over.

And of course, Amanda Bird with the US Bobsled & Skeleton Federation has been helpful not just here, but throughout the 2011/2012 season.  In starting this website late before the season, I was lacking both information and direction.  Amanda’s knowledge in all things USBSF has made a world of difference.  Her attention to detail this week has taken an event on short notice (this event originally was to be run in 2013) and made it appear seamless to the naked eye.

It has been both a pleasure and an honor covering these World Championships, and thank you again to all who have been a part of it.
