FIL Sprint World Cup Results – Sochi 2021

(December 5, 2021) – Below are the results from the first Sprint World cup race of the 2021/2022 season, held in Sochi.

Men’s Luge

In the 2020/2021 season, Kevin Fischnaller was the winner of the Sprint World Cup title. To kick off the 2021/2022 season it was his cousin Dominik who took gold.

Dominik Fischnaller edged out Russia’s Roman Repilov by just .039 to take his first gold medal of the season, one day after leading going into the second heat of the men’s luge race. Repilov’s silver came after a disappointing men’s race a day prior.

Austria’s Wolfgang Kindl finished with a bronze, his first of the season for him.

Max Langenhan, Aleksandr Gorbatcevich, and Johannes Ludwig rounded out the top six.

USA’s Jonny Gustafson finished 15th.

Women’s Luge

Julia Taubitz doubled up on Sunday, winning the women’s luge race earlier in the morning, then the women’s sprint race to end her day.

Taubitz had the third quickest start speed from the final starting spot, and was behind American Summer Britcher for the bulk of her run. Taubitz was nearly perfect, and when she crossed the line she’d edged out Britcher by .021 for gold.

Britcher won silver for the first singles medal for the United States in the luge World Cup season. Dajana Eitberger, who had the quickest second run of the final run in the women’s luge race, finished third.

Latvia’s Kendija Aparjode led at every split until the last and finished fourth, just ahead of Anna Berreiter and Natalie Geisenberger, who finished fifth and sixth for Germany.

Ashley Farquharson finished 14th on the second American sled.

Doubles Luge

Latvia’s banner weekend continued with the doubles Sprint World Cup, where Andris & Juris Sics won gold over Russia’s Aleksandr Denisev & Vladislav Antonov.

Their gold gave Latvia four medals on the weekend, with Sics & Sics winning both bronze in the full course doubles race and the gold in the sprint.

Germany’s Robin Geuke & David Gamm won bronze, just ahead of Yannick Müller & Armin Frauscher in fourth.

The United States’ Chris Mazdzer & Jayson Terdiman finished a season-best fifth, while Andrei Bogdanov & Iurii Prokhorov finished sixth.

Canada placed two teams in the Sprint World Cup race. Devin Wardrope & Cole Zajanski finished 11th, while Tristan Walker & Justin Snith placed 14th.
