FIL Cancels Natural Track Season Finale in Moscow

(February 24, 2022) – The International Luge Federation canceled the season finale of the natural track luge season, set to be held in Moscow. While a statement was not put out on the FIL website nor the FIL Natural Track facebook page as of this writing (Feb. 24, 7:00 PM EST), various athletes mentioned on their facebook pages that the race had been canceled and that they were leaving Moscow due to the invasion in Ukraine.

On the FIL schedule page for Moscow, the race is noted as “canceled”.

With the season now over, Italy’s Alex Gruber is the men’s luge World Cup champion by five points over Austria’s Thomas Kammerlander. European champion Michael Scheikl finished the season in third.

With her perfect season, Evelin Lanthaler won the World Cup title. Greta Pinggera, her Italian teammate, finished the season in second place, with Germany’s Lisa Walch third.

Like Lanthaler, the doubles team of Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara was perfect on the season, beating out Fabian and Simon by over a hundred points. Russia’s Pavel Porshnev and Ivan Lazarev finished the year in third after Italians Patrick and Matthias Lambacher only completed in three races to finish the year in fourth.
