Humphries Slides to Altenberg Monobob Victory

From Altenberg, GER

(January 14, 2023) – If you ask Kaillie Humphries which sliding track is her favorite (which we did), Altenberg is going to be right at the top of that list. She showed just why in the monobob race on Saturday, as she came from behind to win gold.

The American pilot trailed Germany’s Laura Nolte by .15 after one run. On Humphries’ second run she was about as flawless as anyone could be in the single-seater sled as she took the lead with only Nolte to go.

Nolte’s second run was clean through the Kreisel, but fell apart late as she could only mount the fifth quickest run of the heat, giving Humphries the victory by .55.

The win for Humphries was her fifth in six races in Altenberg between monobob and women’s bobsled. The last time she finished out of the medals in Altenberg was 2008.

Nolte finished second for her third straight monobob medal. She set a track record on her first run, but couldn’t match that time on her second run.

Canada’s Cynthia Appiah won bronze, her third medal of the season. Appiah’s two runs were both the third quickest in each heat, and her bronze comes after a tough stretch of a couple forgettable races in Lake Placid and Winterberg.

Lisa Buckwitz gave Germany the quickest two starts of the race on her way to a fourth place finish. Australia’s Bree Walker finished fifth, while China’s Qing Ying finished sixth.

Bianca Ribi finished ninth in her first monobob start in Altenberg, while USA’s Nicole Vogt finished tenth in her first World Cup race on the German track.

With three World Cup races to go on the schedule, Kaillie Humphries is 50 points ahead of Laura Nolte with Lisa Buckwitz third. Cynthia Appiah and Kim Kalicki are fourth and fifth, respectively.
