2013/2014 FIBT World Cup – St. Moritz – Men’s Skeleton (race 1)

From St. Moritz, Switzerland

Coming into the second heat of Friday’s racing at St. Moritz, there was a Dukurs on the top of the stack, but it was the elder brother Tomass ahead of younger brother Martins.  Martins, though, had other plans.  Martins upended Tomass on the second run to take gold in the first of two races this weekend in St. Moritz.  Tomass was able to keep silver, just ahead of Lake Placid winner Matt Antoine, who took bronze.  Alexander Tretyakov set the start record for the weekend, but couldn’t put together two solid slides and took fourth.  Antoine’s teammate, Kyle Tress, finished a season-best fifth place with some of the highest speeds seen on the track all day.

The Canadians had an up and down day.  John Fairbairn finished sixth with two very consistent runs.  Teammate Eric Neilson was in position to score a top five finish, but a slight tap, combined with a tight field led to Neilson dropping to ninth.  Olympic champion Jon Montgomery had a couple hard hits early and finished 29th.

American John Daly looked to put a third sled in the second heat, but a very bumpy second half of his run left him on the outside of a second run, finishing in 23rd.  It was an equally tough run for British skeleton slider Dom Parsons, who finished 21st after a generally inconsistent run down the mile-long, man-made track.

On the other side, Spain’s Ander Mirambell had a career-best run at St. Moritz, finishing 16th after two very solid runs.  Alexandros Kefalas of Greece also made his first second heat of the year, finishing 18th.

The British sliders, for the most part, had a pretty solid day themselves.  Kristan Bromley picked up a few spots from his first run to finish 7th, while Ed Smith had a season-best 12th place finish.  Dom Parsons, though, missed a second run and finished 21st.
