2016/2017 FIL World Cup – Team Relay – Race 1

From Lake Placid, USA

It was a great day for Luge Canada, as the Canadians backed up their two medals in women’s luge with a gold medal in the Team Relay.

Canada was just about as perfect as you could ask for in all three aspects of the event, with Kimberley McRae backing up her silver medal run earlier in the morning with a flawless run. Samuel Edney and the team of Walker & Snith held serve, putting pressure on the United States, Russia, and Germany.

The United States had three decent runs, but not enough to unseat their neighbors to the north. Russia was able to place in front of the United States, mostly on the strength of Semen Pavlichenko’s run, and that left Germany to beat.

The Germans had what could be considered the worst run as a team that they’ve likely ever had. There was trouble right off the bat for women’s gold medalist Tatjana Hüfner. Felix Loch also had trouble, and by that point there was nothing for the team of Eggert & Benecken to do. The Germans would settle for seventh, leaving the United States in the bronze position.
