Ivanova, Egger, Eggert & Benecken Win Sprint Gold

Dec. 14, 2019 – Below are results from the FIL Sprint World Cup race held in Whistler.

Women

Tatyana Ivanova swept the women’s luge medals in Whistler, beating the United States’ Emily Sweeney by .044.

The Russian was behind Sweeney over much of her run, but found time at the bottom to win her third gold medal of the FIL World Cup season.

Sweeney’s second place finish came after missing the top six in the World Cup race the day before.

Cheyenne Rosenthal finished a career-best third, while Viktoriia Demchenko and AnnaBerreiter rounded out the top five. Julia Taubitz and Andrea Vötter tied for sixth.

Men

Reinhard Egger won his first medal of the season in the men’s sprint competition, edging Roman Repilov by just .007 for gold.

Repilov was behind early, but closed the gap between he and the Austrian at the bottom of his run, coming up just short to take silver.

Jonas Müller continued his breakout season with a bronze medal effort.

Felix Loch, David Gleirscher, and Tucker West rounded out the top six.

Chris Mazdzer finished ninth on the second American sled in the field.

Doubles

In what was one ofthe closest race in the short history of the FIL Sprint World Cup, Toni Eggert & Sascha Benecken beat out teammates Tobias Wendl & Tobias Arlt by just .003, and Russians Vsevolod Kashkin & Konstantin Korshunov by .004.

Eggert & Benecken were fastest at both intermediate splits to win gold, while Wendl & Arlt came from behind to take silver.

All three teams had matching 69.4 km/h start speeds.

Aleksandr Denisev & Vladislav Antonov finished in fourth, .03 back, wihle Emanuel Rieder & Simon Kainzwaldner finished fifth and the duo of Andris & Juris Sics finished sixth.

Chris Mazdzer and Jayson Terdiman finished just inside the top ten in tenth place, while Canadians Tristan Walker & Justin Snith finished 13th on their home track.
