From Winterberg, GER
Dec. 15, 2019 – Bennet Buchmüller edged out Richard Oelsner for gold in Winterberg, winning by just .01 over his teammate.
Buchmüller came into the second heat in third, behind Oelsner and Jonas Jannusch. On the second run Buchmüller put down the second quickest run of the day, while Jannusch made a costly mistake late in his run to drop him well out of the top ten. That left Heat 1 leader Richard Oelsner between Buchmüller and gold.
Oelsner’s team mustered only the seventh quickest start of the heat, and never could find their rhythm down the Winterberg course, eventually finishing fifth in the heat, and second overall to give Buchmüller the victory.
The gold for Buchmüller was his first European Cup gold medal since December 18, 2016 in Altenberg.
Patrick Baumgartner jumped up from eighth in the first heat to give Italy a bronze medal on the day, while Maximilian Illmann finished only .01 behind Baumgartner.
Rostislav Gaitiukevich finished tied with Illmann for fourth, moving up from 13th on the strength of the quickest run of the day in the second heat.
Great Britain’s Lamin Deen finished sixth.
