Russia Wins Sigulda Team Relay

From Sigulda, LAT

(Jan. 10, 2021) – The Russian team of Tatyana Ivanova, Semen Pavlichenko and the duo of Vsevolod Kashkin & Konstantin Korshunov edged out Latvia to win gold in Sigulda.

The Latvian team of Eliza Tiruma, Artur Darznieks, and Andris & Juris Sics toolk the lead over from Italy on the strength of Sics & Sics final leg of the relay. Russia came out firing with both Ivanova and Pavlichenko opening up a wide margin. Kashkin & Korshunov held their own to give Russia a .167 advantage.

Germany was the last team down and uncharacteristically had absolutely nothing for the Russians, falling behind early and unable to rally. Germany finished third, behind Russia and Latvia.

Italy finished fourth with the fourth quickest run by each of their relay team members. Slovakia finished a season-best fifth and Ukraine sixth.

Sigula’s track has a tricky final Kreisel to the finish straight, and both the United States and Austria had trouble getting to the paddle. Both teams were disqualified after a member missed the paddle slap.
