Lotholz Leads Canadian Monobob 1-2 in Igls

From Igls, AUT

(Jan. 14, 2021) – Melissa Lotholz came from behind to win her first race of the 2020/2021 season, beating out teammate Cynthia Appiah for the top spot.

Lotholz sat second behind Appiah by just .02 going into the second run. On her second trip down the 1976 Olympic track, Lotholz nearly equaled her first time to put her in the lead with Appiah to go. Appiah could not answer, falling to second and winning silver while Lotholz took gold.

The win for Lotholz was her second in Women’s Monobob. Appiah’s silver was her fifth medal in six monobob races.

Dutch slider Karlien Sleper put down the second quickest run of the second heat to finish third, ahead of Swiss pilot Linda Züblin. Züblin now has three races under her belt in three different disciplines: Women’s bobsled, women’s monobob, and four-man bobsled as a part of Beat Hefti’s team in the 2015 World Cup four-man event.

Canada put all three of their sleds in the top five, with Bianca Ribi finishing fifth, well ahead of Romania’s Georgeta Popescu.

Slovakia’s Viktoria Cernanska and Lichentenstien’s Simone Pfeiffer rounded out the field.
