Meyers Taylor Breaks Start & Track Record in Winterberg Monobob Victory

From Winterberg, GER

(December 11, 2021) – Like the women’s skeleton race a day prior, the women’s monobob race took the existing track records in Winterberg and left them in the dust. At the end of the race it was the United States’ Elana Meyers Taylor setting all of the records and taking gold.

USA’s Kaillie Humphries was the first pilot below the track record from the fourth starting position, lowering the start record from a 59.52 to a 59.51. From there times plummeted, with Breeana Walker getting the time down to a 59.89 to take the lead after one heat.

Meyers Taylor came into the second heat in second place after setting a start record in the first heat and getting within .06 of Walker. Her second run was the fastest of the competition, a record 58.88. Walker couldn’t answer and fell to second, which gave Meyers Taylor her third women’s monobob gold medal in four races.

Walker’s silver was her best finish at the World Cup level of monobob racing this season. She skipped the Altenberg race a week prior to race European Cup in Winterberg, where she won gold.

Cynthia Appiah won her second straight Monobob World Series medal, taking bronze a week after winning a silver medal in Altenberg.

Germany’s Laura Nolte finished fourth, only .05 out of the medals, while Russia’s Nadezhda Sergeeva and Canada’s Melissa Lotholz rounded out the top six.

Canada’s Christine de Bruin helped put all three Canadian women in the top ten with a ninth place finish.

Kaillie Humphries struggled to find any speed in her monobob in Winterberg. The American had a pair of strong pushes and clean drives, but lacked any discernible speed and finished 13th.
