From Altenberg, GER
(January 9, 2022) – Stefan Röttig won the European Cup season finale and with it the season points title.
Röttig trailed Russia’s Evgeniy Rukosuev by .04 after the first heat, with Germany’s Cedric Renner in third. On the second run Rukosuev’s downtime was .02 off the pace set by Renner in the heat, but was enough to move into the lead with only Röttig to go. Röttig answered by putting down what was the quickest run of the heat by over a half of a second to win gold.
The victory for Röttig was his second of the European Cup season, and sixth straight medal. For Rukosuev, the gold medal was his fifth in international competition, with four wins in Intercontinental Cup action earlier in the year.
Renner took bronze, well ahead of Latvia’s Elvis Veinbergs in fourth. Ludwig Manhardt of Germany and Mark Lynch of Canada rounded out the top six.
Daniel Barefoot and Hunter Williams put two Americans in the top 11, with Barefoot in tenth, .3 ahead of Williams in 11th.
Canada’s Kyle Murray finished 15th, while Jeff Bauer of Luxembourg finished 18th, a career best in European Cup.
The race doubled as the Junior European Championships. In that race, Rukosuev took gold, Renner silver and Veinbergs bronze.
With his win, Röttig won the European Cup title by just 23 points over Renner. Germany swept the top three spots, with Ludwig Mannhardt in third.
