From Park City, USA
(December 9, 2023) – IBSF North American Cup newcomer Hyungjun Sim held off a pair of veteran sliders to win his first career gold medal on Saturday.
Sim slid to a .14 lead after the first heat, with reigning North American Cup champion Brendan Doyle .14 behind him, and both USA’s Bradley Nicol and Canada’s Mark Lynch in the hunt.
On the second run Lynch slid to a guaranteed medal by taking the lead with three sleds to go then holding it as Nicol finished his run just .06 behind the Canadian.
Doyle’s second slide, while .18 slower than Lynch’s, was still enough to take the lead by .09 with only Sim to go.
Sim’s second push matched his first, but the slide was just a bit slower. However, it was quicker than Doyle’s and enough to give the Korean his first career IBSF North American Cup gold medal in just his fifth race.
Doyle’s silver was his second in three races and his sixth medal in seven events in Park City.
Lynch was part of two Canadians in the top five. Behind Nicol in fourth was Ryan Kuehn in fifth, while Malaysia’s Jonathan Yaw continued his strong season with a sixth place effort.
Sebastian Regier finished ninth for three Canadians in the top ten, while Noah Park helped place two Americans in the top ten.
Sam Allred, Darryl Payne, and Baden Park finished 11th, 12th, and 13th, while Andrew Whittier-Neises finished 17 to finish out the American side.
Canadians Jacob Coleman and Marc-Antoine Vigneault finished 15th and 16th for Canada.
