From Lake Placid, USA
(January 7, 2026) – Katie Uhlaender took gold yet again in Lake Placid as she held off South Korea’s Sujung Hong for top honors.
Uhlaender was the third slider off in the first heat, and opened up a 1.63 second advantage over Columbia’s Laura Vargas. Hong was next, and found herself .61 back. Over the remainder of the first heat only Denmark’s Nanna Johansen able to get within a half second of the 2012 world champ.
In the second heat, Switzerland’s Julia Simmchen put down a strong second effort to slide into the lead ahead of Puerto Rico’s Kellie Delka. She eventually gave up the spot to Hong, but both Hong and Simmchen were able to outslide Johansen, who had a slightly bumpy second run and fell to third with Uhlaender still to go.
Uhlaender’s start was .02 quicker off the top, and her slide was just like her first: Progressively faster throughout the length of the track. While it wasn’t a blowout second run like it was the first, Uhlaender’s second run was still the quickest of the heat and enough for a .70 second victory over Hong, with Simmchen third, .01 behind Hong.
Johansen, Delka, and South Africa’s Nicole Burger rounded out the top six.
Grace Dafoe was the top Canadian in eighth, with Liesel Baker ninth for the United States and Emily Bateman tenth for Canada.
With two races to go in the 2025/2026 North American Cup season, Nicole Burger is your point leader, five points ahead of Sujung Hong. Liesel Baker, Kellie Delka, and Laura Vargas round out the top five. Katie Uhlaender is already ninth despite only having raced in two of the six events.
