2016/2017 FIL World Cup – Team Relay – Race 5

From PyeongChang, KOR

Germany won in the Team Relay for the third time in five events, cruising to a .431 victory over Austria in the process.

Natalie Geisenberger was edged by Russian Tatyana Ivnova in the women’s portion of the race, but both Andi Langenhan and the team of Toni Eggert & Sascha Benecken pulled away to lead the Germans to victory.

Quick runs by Wolfgang Kindl and the doubles team of Peter Penz & Georg Fischler helped Austria score a season-best silver medal, while Latvia won their third team relay bronze medal in a row.

The United States finished fourth, while the Russian Federation and Canada rounded out the top six.

In World Cup standings, there’s a logjam from second back. Germany holds a substantial lead, and will need to falter in Altenberg to drop the title. Behind them, there are five nations within five points: Austria and Russia tied for second, the United States four points behind in fourth, and Canada and Latvia tied for fifth. Whichever of those teams finish ahead of the others in Altenberg will do no worse than second overall.
