Gleischer Wins First FIL World Cup Gold

From Altenberg, GER

Jan. 11, 2020 – Much like bobsled’s Mariama Jamanka, David Gleirscher won an Olympic gold medal before winning a gold medal on his World Cup tour. It took a bit longer for the Austrian to find his way to the top of the podium, but in Altenberg he did just that.

Gleirscher opened up nearly a two tenth of a second advantage over the field, and while his second run didn’t particularly need to be flawless, it was as good as he needed to cruise to a .233 victory over Italian Dominik Fischnaller.

The win was the first World Cup victory for Gleirscher, whose previous best finish had been third (most recently in Sigulda in the 2018/2019 season).

Fischnaller finished with a season-best silver medal, his fourth medal of the season.

Felix Loch jumped up from seventh in the first heat to win bronze.

Kristers Aparjods finished fourth, up from sixth in the first heat, while Semen Pavlichenko fell from fourth to fifth in the second heat. Max Langenhan rounded out the top six in sixth.

Jonas Müller, winner of the season-opening two races, crashed on his second run and fell from third in the first heat to 32nd.

For the United States, Olympic silver medalist Chris Mazdzer finished 13th, one spot ahead of teammate Jonathan Jonny Gusstafson. Tucker West had trouble in his first heat, but moved up from 25th to 21st in the second run.

Reid Watts finished 18th as the lone Canadian in the field.
