Jan. 19, 2020 – Evelin Lanthaler came into Romania riding an eleven race World Cup winning streak. It took Greta Pinggera, the last woman to win prior to the streak to knock her back off the top spot of the podium.
Austrian Tina Unterberger led Pinggera by .14 going into the second heat, with Lanthaler sitting in an unfamiliar position of fourth.
On the second run Lanthaler threw down the fastest run of the day to put the pressure on the women ahead of her. Pinggera answered, and while her second run time was slower than Lanthaler’s it was enough to edge her teammate by .04.
Unterberger could only set the third fastest run of the second heat, dropping her from first to third at the end of the race and giving Pinggera the win, with Lanthaler second.
Michelle Diepold finished fourth, ahead of Ekaterina Lavrenteva and Daniela Mittermair, who rounded out the top six.
Pinggera’s win was her first since the 2017/2018 season (Deutschnofen), and was the 23rd straight World Cup race where either Pinggera or Lanthaler was the winner. Unterberger was the last non-Italian winner, winning the opening race in Küthai to open the 2016/2017 season.
