Westin-Vippola Wins Season Finale, Bissonnette Takes Title

From Park City, USA

Feb. 16, 2020 – A day after narrowly missing out on his second career gold medal, Sebastian Westin-Vippola came from behind to take victory in Park City.

Westin-Vippola came into thes econd heat in third, behind Christopher Stewart and Israel Blanco, and just ahead of World Cup leader Lonnie Bissonnette.

Like he had the previous day, Westin-Vippola put down the fastest run of the second heat, well ahead of Bissonnette or anyone else prior to his trip down the 2002 Olympic track.

Blanco could not match the time by either Westin-Vippola or Bissonnette and dropped to third with only Stewart to go.

Stewart struggled out of the gate, and could only muster the 13th fastest run of the heat, dropping him out of the medals and giving the gold to Westin-Vippola by .71 over Bissonnette.

Blanco held on for third.

Stewart finished fourth, .3 behind Blanco, while Fabrizio Caselli finished fifth. Lee Thibeault helped put both Canadian sleds in the top six with a sixth place run.

Great Britain’s Corie Mapp needed both a win and some help by Bissonnette to take the World Cup title. He struggled in Park City, finishing 13th in the final race to finish second overall behind Bissonnette. Latvia’s Arturs Klots finished third on the season.
