2019/2020 European Cup Bobsled Final Points

From Durham, USA

Feb. 1, 2020 – Below are the final season tallies for 2-man, 4-man, and women’s bobsled on the European Cup side after an exciting season finished in Igls.

2-man Bobsled

Mihai Tentea became the first male Romanian slider since Nicholae Istrate won the 4-man North American Cup title during the 2009/2010 season, edging out Olympic 2-man bronze medalist (and 4-man gold medalist) Oskars Melbardis in his comeback season from back injuries. Tentea came into Igls needing to stay close to Melbardis to win the season title, and he was able to do just that by finishing sixth in the season finale to win the title by a mere five points over Melbardis.

Tentea was also the tour’s top junior in 2-man bobsled.

Switzerland’s Simon Friedli finished third overall, winning a gold and silver in Sigulda to solidify his position in the rankings despite missing the season opener in Lillehammer.

Russia’s Rostislav Gaitiukevich finished fourth on the season, capping his European Cup 2-man effort with a gold medal in Igls. Max Illmann and Hans Peter Hannighofer finished the season in fifth and sixth, respectively.

4-man Bobsled

On the 4-man side of things, Jonas Jannusch cruised to an overall season title. The German won four golds and two silvers on the season on his way to a 164 point victory over Olympic champion Oskars Melbardis.

Melbardis couldn’t quite match his 2-man effort on the season, never factoring in any of the 4-man medal hunts and finishing with just one top five on the season. Just 20 points behind Melbardis was the 2-man champion Mihai Tentea, who started the season with a fourth place in Lillehammer but struggled to keep up with Jannusch over most of the season.

Timo Rohner finished fourth on the season on the strength of a bronze medal in Königssee, while Patrick Baumgartner and Rostislav Gaitiukevich rounded out the top six.

Women’s Bobsled

Romanian Andreea Grecu dominated the 2019/2020 European Cup women’s bobsled program, clinching the title a race early to become the first Romanian sliding champion at any level since Nicholae Istrate during the 2009/2010 North American Cup 4-man season. Grecu finished the season with five gold medals and three bronzes to take a 204 point victory over Germany’s Anne Lobenstein.

Lobenstein finished her season with three top six finishes, enough to keep ahead of Switzerland’s Melanie Hasler in third. Russia’s Anastasiia Makarova finished the season in fourth.

France’s Margot Boch had a strong season in six starts, winning two silver medals on her way to finishing fifth overall, over 100 points ahead of Australia’s Bree Walker in sixth.
