FIL World Championships Pulled from Whistler

From Berchtesgaden, GER

(Sept. 2, 2020) – The FIL announced today that the Executive Board, with the support of the Canadian Luge Federation, has canceled the 50th FIL Luge World Championships scheduled for February 5-7, with an alternative venue to be announced at a later date.

In a joint statement by FIL and the Canadian federation, FIL is “pressing pause” on the Championships in Whistler.

“While our focus is on doing our part to minimize the spread of COVID-19, it is our sincere [belief] when our borders open for international travel, Canada will host a World Championships in Whistler,” said Canadian executive director Tim Farstad.

With the border currently closed, athletes would need to quarantine for 14 days prior to competing. As there’s no guarantee that the mandatory quarantine would be lifted prior to World Championships, the decision was made to move World Championships to another location.
