2016/2017 FIL World Cup – Men’s Luge – Race 2

From Lake Placid, USA

Tucker West burst onto the scene two seasons ago, coming out of nowhere to win in Lake Placid. In the 2016/2017 race, the American was considered a favorite and over two runs he showed why.

West was just a .008 ahead of Russian Semen Pavlichenko going into the second run. Pavlichenko put down a very clean and fast second run, putting the pressure on West. West charged back, and with a second run just .002 slower than Pavlichenko, West took his second gold medal in his FIL World Cup career. Pavlichenko finished with a silver medal, with Austrian Wolfgang Kindl finishing third.

West’s teammate Chris Mazdzer had an uncharacteristically rough run for his first run placing him third behind West and Pavlichenko going into Run 2. His second run was good, but not quite as great as Kindl’s, moving him back to fourth overall. Russian Roman Repilov finished fifth, with Felix Loch finishing as the highest ranking German in sixth.

Taylor Morris had a good showing for the United States in 12th, while teammates Johnny Gustafson and John Fennell finished 19th and 27th, respectively.

Samuel Edney finished 15th as the top-scoring Canadian. Teammate Reid Watts finished 18th, while Mitchel Malyk finished 26th after a bumpy run his first time down, moving up from 32nd.
