Pavlichenko Wins in Sigulda

From Sigulda, LAT

(Jan. 28, 2018) Semen Pavlichenko won the final full course World Cup race of the 2017/2018 IBSF World Cup season, though Felix Loch made it interesting in the final run.

Pavlichenko carried over a tenth of a second advantage over Loch going into the second heat in Sigulda. Loch was his usual consistent self, setting the second quickest run of the heat (behind Slovakian Jozef Ninis).

Pavlichenko was the final man down, and an early mistake brought him back to Loch. The Russian was able to gather himself, though, and edged Loch by just .011 to win his third gold medal of the season.

Loch finished with a silver, just over a tenth ahead of Russian Roman Repilov, who finished with a bronze.

Latvian Inars Kivlenieks finished fourth on home ice. Wolfgang Kindl moved up from 17th to fifth place on the strength of a second-fastest run of the heat (tied with Loch), while Chris Mazdzer of the United States moved up from seventh to sixth to round out the top six.

Ninis, who had the fastest run of the second heat, moved up from 21st to seventh.

Tucker West helped put two American men in the top ten with a tenth place effort, while Taylor Morris struggled in his second run to finish 25th.

Canadians Reid Watts and Samuel Edney finished 30th and 31st respectively for Canada.
