2016 IBSF World Championships – Women’s Skeleton

From Igls, AUT

The women’s skeleton world championship was a far cry from the men’s event, with none of the medal positions really solidified until the final run was over. Through all four runs, though, Tina Hermann of Germany led the way.

Hermann bested home-track hero Janine Flock in each run by just small fractions of a second, but over the course of four runs that added up to just over .4 of an advantage from Hermann to Flock. Hermann took gold, while Flock would settle for silver.

The battle for the bronze medal was tough throughout all four heats. Russian Elena Nikitina ended up taking bronze, just ahead of Swiss slider Marina Gilardoni and American Annie O’Shea. Gilardoni and O’Shea finished in fourth and fifth, separated by just .03. Elisabeth Vathje finished sixth for Canada.

The 2012 World Champion Katie Uhlaender made her return to the World Championships after a year off with a tenth place finish, while teammate Kendall Wesenberg made her World Championships debut tied for 15th with Joska Le Conte of the Netherlands.

Jane Channell had a huge mistake on the load of her second run, finishing 13th overall. If it hadn’t been for missing the handle on her sled on that run, Channell likely would have been in contention for, at the very least, a top six.

Laura Deas finished just outside of the top ten in 11th place as the top-finishing British slider, teammate Donna Creighton finished 18th. Aussie slider Jackie Narracott finished 17th, moving up in each of her final two runs. Katie Tannenbaum finished 25th for the Virgin Islands.
