2016/2017 IBSF World Cup – Four-Man Bobsled – Race 4

From Winterberg, GER

Much like in the two-man competition, a German pulled away in his second run to dominate the field.

Johannes Lochner came into the second run just .13 ahead of teammate Nico Walther. Lochner put down a nearly flawless second run, pulling away to win by .45 over his countryman.

Austrian Benjamin Maier continued to impress, finishing with a bronze medal, only .02 behind Walther, and .18 ahead of Russian Alexander Kasjanov. Francesco Friedrich and Alexey Stulnev tied for fifth.

The race doubled as the European Championships, and the top six for the World Cup race doubled as the top six for the Championships.

Steven Holcomb once again led the way for the United States with a seventh place finish. The American’s starts were some of his team’s best of the season, which helped move the team from eighth to seventh. Teammates Codie Bascue and Justin Olsen finished 13th and 18th, respectively.

Justin Kripps was the top-scoring Canadian with a ninth place finish. Teammate Nick Poloniato finished 19th after a rough second run. Chris Spring continued to come back from injury, but struggled with the weather and finished 21st.

Though not as bad as the women’s race, the snow was a factor in the first heat of the competition. the first half of the field pushed down the track in a heavier snow. The grooves at the start were clearly not being swept, and teams suffered. Of note, World Cup leader Rico Peter’s team pushed a 5.29, one of the slowest in the competition. Their downtime suffered as well, and they finished their first run in 20th. Peter spent significant time in the leaders box in the second run, eventually finishing 14th.

Lamin Deen also fell victim to the snowy start. His team’s first start was .18 slower than his second run. He’d eventually finish 12th. Teammate Ollie Biddulph finished 20th.
