2016/2017 IBSF World Cup – Four-Man Bobsled – Race 6

From Königssee, GER

Much like the two-man bobsled race the day before, the four-man event in Königssee provided an amazing amount of excitement and closing racing. And much like two-man event, a German found his way to the top of the podium.

For the second time in two days, Johannes Lochner led a very tight field coming into the second heat of the race. Behind him, a very tightly packed field had second through tenth within .2 seconds.

As the field came down, Francesco Friedrich made his move, coming up from eighth to at top five finish, putting the pressure on the top four teams. Steven Holcomb and Alexey Stulnev both had equal runs to keep within .01 of each other, with Nico Walther and Lochner to come.

Walther’s run was clean, but not much faster than the men before him, leaving the door open for Lochner, and Lochner took advantage, taking the gold ahead of Walther and Stulnev, who rounded out the podium.

Holcomb missed his second medal of the weekend by .01, finishing .01 ahead of Friedrich and .03 ahead of Alexander Kasjanov, who finished sixth.

Bradley Hall finished 12th, moving up from a 14th place first run for Great Britain, while Lamin Deen finished 17th in the second British entry.

Königssee is a track that rewards experience, and the United States has two pilots who haven’t spent much time in Europe. Codie Bascue finished 21st, hanging onto the bubble spot for a while before being bumped out by Britain’s Bradley Hall. Like in two man bobsled, Justin Olsen had trouble again down the “bendaway” and finished 26th.

Justin Kripps led the way for Canada with a 16th place finish. Neither he or Chris Spring could get any speed out of their four-man sleds despite seemingly clean runs in both heats. Spring finsihed 19th, while Nick Poloniato missed the second heat with a 23rd place finish.
